Bong Hits 4 Jesus

The highest court in our land is considering whether a student was within his constitutional rights to display this sign across the street from his school. It may seem silly, but it's actually a pretty interesting issue, with some unusual collegues lining up on each side. Oh, and ever wonder what Ken Starr is up to these days? Representing the school that suspended the student for this! More here: http://www.cnn.com/2007/LAW/03/19/scotus.bonghits.ap/index.html

"Starr, joined by the Bush administration, also asked the court to adopt a broad rule that could essentially give public schools the right to clamp down on any speech with which they disagree. That argument did not appear to have widespread support among the justices."

Wow.

I happen to know that the Lord preferred a zoom tube or a joint over the bong.

Man, I'll bet Jesus' would get some good weed. He's probably about the only person Willie Nelson would hit up for a joint.

Seems to be a case of overreaction by a well-intentioned principal. In this case, I feel like I should be opposed to freedom of speech because the religious right is supporting it! Which way do I turn?

My quandry exactly, Dave. As a school-related activity, I think the student's behavior is subject to policing by school, but then what if the sign had said "Free Tibet" instead of BH4J? What if this was a group of college students instead of HS, is constitutionality age-specific? We need someone like Steven Colbert to clear this up for us.

Or what if it said something like 'Jesus hates gay people'? It's a really sticky situation. I was a little less sympathetic to him once I learned it was a school-endorsed function, even though he was off campus.
