YYZ

11-year-old girl taking ass and kicking names with this old Rush chestnut.

Yet one more reason why North Dakota kicks South Dakota's ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are over 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants in the US, or about 1 for every 23,000 Americans. But even market penetration this advanced doesn’t mean that McDonald’s is everywhere. Somewhere in South Dakota is the McFarthest Spot in the nation, from which you’d have to drive 145 miles to get your Big Mac (if you could fly, however, and why wouldn't you, it’d be only 107 miles). I bet they drive it all the time.

Those Dancing Days

I think we’ve all caught ourselves wondering what Anyface would sound like if Dave had been born in early 1990's Sweden instead of Nixon-era Saskatoon. I think I have the answer.

I posted a video from these gals as a Catchy Friday a while back; the whole CD is terrific. Free trapped Polanski!

Tennis? Tennis??? [With apologies to Jim Mora]

There's something slightly discomforting about this video, but it sure puts Lee Ranaldo's tennis injury to shame. I must say I am tempted to go see these guys at the 9:30 club in a couple of weeks.

Son of a Bitch!!

Photo: Amanda DeCadenet

From Rolling Stone:
Sonic Youth have canceled their October 4th performance at this year’s Austin City Limits festival because guitarist Lee Ranaldo is out of action with a fractured wrist.
I've never seen them and was very excited to have the opportunity. The Beastie Boys have also cancelled.

Jim Carroll

First To Play 'Catholic Boy' and 'Dry Dreams (vinyl rip)' will enjoy. I have a greatest hits comp, but it won't rip for some reason and it really doesn't have anything these two don't (Jay actually gave it to me as a gift one year, funnily enough).

I remember reading an interview with Joe Strummer where he talked about he and Pete Townshend sitting in an apartment listening to 'Catholic Boy' and going nuts about how great it was and how it didn't sound like anybody else out there. You will recognize 'People Who Died' from its being covered by a million bands (Drive-by Truckers included) and playing in a handful of films, including 'Basketball Diaries' and one of the Living Dead movies.

My favorite by him is 'It's Too Late,' which is below.

Well ... ?

I just remembered Andrew was brewing beer a little while ago. How did it turn out?

Classy

I swear to God I'll fucking take this ball and shove it down your fucking throat! Do you hear me? I swear to God. You better be glad--you better be fucking glad that I'm not, I swear.
I know this is yesterday's news, but that one guy's reaction cracks me up.

All this Beatles love makes me happy. Find Things Places. And keep it coming. Up next for me: Beatles for Sale and Hard Day's Night.

Jody Stephens On Sound Opinions

From Sound Opinions:
During this episode Jim and Greg celebrate the legacy of Big Star with a Classic Album Dissection of their first two records, #1 Record and Radio City. Both albums have recently been re-released as a double album, and a new Big Star box set is due out next week. As Jim and Greg discuss, the band changed the history of American music without selling very many records. With a sound that combined Memphis Soul with British Invasion rock, they laid the groundwork for “Power Pop” and influenced bands including R.E.M., Wilco and The Replacements. The original Big Star lineup included former Box Tops singer Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Andy Hummel and Jim and Greg’s guest this week, drummer Jody Stephens.
Give it a listen here.

Shit...

I fuckin' loved this guy.

Ha!

Catchy Friday

Morbid but catchy in a Nick Cave meets Interpol sort of way. Can't beat that.

Call It A Comeback

We saw this on Labor Day, but I've been too busy to post. Easily QT's best since Pulp Fiction. I was very pleasantly surprised that the Nazi scalps schtick in the trailer is but a fraction of the movie.

(And yes, Pitt's Tennessee accent is beyond bad, but knowing Tarantino's love of grindhouse cinema, I kinda think that's the point.)

Giddy over this new Beatles stuff!

These remasters have me as giggly-happy as I was as a schoolgirl. It's the window you've looked out of dirty for so long you forget what the outdoors looked like, suddenly thrown open. It's scratching the limb that's that has been in a cast for months. I'll definitely be going shopping this weekend.

Traveling Far?

NPR is streaming "Keep an Eye on the Sky," aka the Big Star Box Set here.

UPDATE: They are actually only streaming the first disc. Bastards!

Sad but true

Very interesting article here.

Beatles for Sale

I'm sure we're all aware of the Beatles re-issues coming out today. I also imagine (get it?) certain bastardos will be buying one or two of their old favorites. I'll probably try and get "Let It Be" and "Revolver" in the next few days. Anyone else going to try and pick up any?

Predictions, anyone?

So I went back and looked up our NFL predictions from last year, and they had more holes than the great Rickey Jackson's distinctive facemask, pictured above. Using an ultra-scientific scoring system of 1 point for each correct team in the conference championships, 2 points per Superbowl team, and 4 points for the Superbowl winner, the grand totals were as follows:
Andrew: 0 points
Dave: 0 points
Joe: 0 points
Mike: 0 points
Jay: unknown -- limited his predictions to the potential plotlines of Sex in the City 2

So we can't get any worse, right?

But do they have TiVo?

Here's a great song by some obscure band out of N.Carolina via New Orleans.

How much per win????

I taught a ccouple of classes up at LSU in 1999 and 2000, and I have to say the facilities in the academic buildings up there were pretty basic and often run down. I can't imagine they have improved all that much since then. Now I see where all the money went.

Too Cool For Words

I saw this commercial last night and rewound it about fifteen times. Anybody gonna get Beatles Rockband?

There's a really fascinating article in this month's Wired Magazine, a kind of behind-the-scenes, making-of piece. As you might expect, it's a minor miracle the game happened at all. Lots of legal and technical wrangling.

You can read the entire article here. I'm going to watch this clip again ...

He done got his Ya Ya's out.

Evidently, Charlie has said he's done. No doubt Mick and Keith will soldier on with some other drummer. Is it safe to say their best years are behind them?
