Believe The Hype

It's as good as everybody says. I'm not prone to hyperbole, but this may be my all-time favorite superhero movie. Perfect casting, solid story, seamless effects, fantastic action. (And a little comic book geek surprise after the credits, so stick around.) The suit, designed by Stan Winston, is absolutely amazing. Likewise, the CGI is very convincing, unlike the cartoony Spiderman.

This is Marvel Studios entry into the motion picture business, and they've made a damn good first impression. This weekend's box office is the second biggest opening for a non-sequel ever, $201 million worldwide. Of course, the advantage of Marvel owning the characters and financing their own movies is the possibility for cameos. And if you believe the rumors, Marvel is laying the foundation for an eventual Avengers movie, giving each character his own franchise first. The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man are out of the gate, but they're spooling up for Thor and Captain America now.

Let me know what you bastards think if you see it.

From the sometimes reliable Wikipedia:

In a report to shareholders on May 5, 2008, Marvel Entertainment announced the release dates for two planned Avenger movies. The First Avenger: Captain America (working title) is schedule for May 6, 2010, followed by the The Avengers scheduled for July 2011.

We tried to go see it this weekend, but couldn't find a sitter. Hopefully soon.

I'm planning on going next Sunday. I'm really excited about the Avengers movies too. I wonder if Vision, Scarlet Witch, etc. will get their due. And will the Beast be included? He was in the Avengers for a long time.

Not sure Dave, but I'm thinking they'll keep it to the original group, probably Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Wasp, Ant-Man. Maybe Hulk?

Supposedly, another easter egg to look for is Captain America's shield over Pepper Potts's shoulder when she discovers Tony taking off the armor and says, "Are those bullet holes?"

Went to Iron Man today. I don't want to ruin anything for you, so I'll just say that I second what the robot geek said. Once we've all seen it, we can discuss some of the more questionable story elements. I personally thought the fight with Godzilla where the lizard ended up impaled on the Eiffel Tower thanks to the help of the X-men was a little over-the-top.
