Ooh La La
By all accounts, Ronnie Lane was a sweetheart of a guy. And dang it if he couldn't write songs that made the hair on your arms stand up.
Poor old granddad
I laughed at all his words
I thought he was a bitter man
He spoke of women's ways
They'll trap you, then they use you
Before you even know
For love is blind and you're far too kind
Don't ever let it show
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger
I wish that I knew what I know now
The can can's such a pretty show
They'll steal your heart away
But backstage, back on earth again
The dressing rooms are grey
They come on strong and it ain't too long
Before they make you feel a man
But love is blind and you soon will find
You're just a boy again
When you want her lips, you get a cheek
Makes you wonder where you are
If you want it more then she's fast asleep
Means you're twinkling with the stars
Poor young grandson, there's nothing I can say
You'll have to learn, just like me
And that's the hardest way
Ooh la la
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was stronger

Doesn't he live in Austin, TX now? (I used to know someone there.)
He did, but multiple sclerosis got him in 1997.
God, I fucking love Ronnie Lane. His album with Pete Townshend, 'Rough Mix' is one of my all time favorites. Pete's got one or two good ones on there ("My Baby Gives It Away"), but Ronnie's stuff is all heartbreaker. "Annie" kills me everytime.
Ian McLagan, from the Faces, is an Austinite and did regular shows. Everytime I went and saw him (okay, both times), I would stumble up after the set and tell him how much I loved Ronnie Lane. He was always gracious and talked to me about the documentary, which I finally got to see. If you haven't had a chance, see 'The Passing Show.' It'll make you a fan.
Never heard of Rough Mix, but I'm really interested now. Is yours vinyl, or could you Faces Townshend Plonk it? I've added The Passing Show to my Netflix queue, thanks!
I remember the ARMS benefit shows from the 80s. A great cause, obviously, but it meant sitting through Jimmy Page playing an instrumental version of STH. Yecch. I LOVE the Faces and I'm definitely going to look for Rough Mix.
I've got RM on CD, but it's packed away with the rest of my stuff. If you can wait a couple of weeks, I'll put it up.
Not to worry; it's up.
