The Band You're 'Supposed' to Like

I guess this is the opposite of 'guilty pleasures'. What bands are you supposed to LOVE, but just don't. I have two major entries: the above pictured Led Zep, and the Who. I like the Who a lot more than Zep, but other than Who's Next and a few singles they give me the blahs.

Zeppelin is a whole other story. I don't know why I can't get into the bombast, the faerie-tales, the awesome musicianship, and the primal howling. But I can't. Sure, there are plenty of Zep songs I like (Going to California, The Ocean, D'yer Mak'r, Fool in the Rain, The Crunge), but the majority of them it wouldn't bother me if I never heard them again. Who or what is to blame for this turn of events? A few possibilities:

1) Rock Radio. Constant heavy rotation of 7 or 8 songs from a rich catalog ruins said songs.

2) Punk Rock. Punk rock taught me that stuff like Zeppelin sucks. This doesn't explain my antipathy to the Who, however.

3) I'm an idiot who doesn't get it, man.

What are your thoughts? Which artists are on your list?

Sports Also Suck

My New Orleans Saints, pre-season faves to win the NFC and go to the Super Bowl, are a dismal 4-6. They started out 0-4, won 4 in a row to raise hopes, and have dropped the last two to crappy teams. How are your favorite teams doing?

In related news, I'm first in fantasy league, sweeping the floor with my opponents every week.

Sports are great

Last night I had the opportunity to be one of sixteen total UNO Privateer fans to witness them upset the vaunted North Carolina State Wolfpack. UNO is a little school that has never been ranked. NCSU is a former National Champion and regular participant in the NCAA tournament. Last year they knocked off both Duke and UNC. UNO played like it was the national championship and won on a 3 pointer with 1.7 seconds left. The entire arena was silent in shock as the sixteen of us behind the UNO bench went crazy with the players. It was awesome, and reminded me of why I love sports, and especially college basketball: You never know what's going to happen.

One ignoramus frat boy behind us yelled out, "At least we'll have jobs when we graduate" at the UNO players. Talk about a poor sport. Fuck him, and geaux Privateers!

I'll see your crappy cover and raise you one.......

This abomination is A Perfect Circle covering 'Imagine'. The vid is kind of cool, but taking this song of peace and hope and casting it in minor key veiled-threat mode really, really sucks. Great song, shit band.

Great Song, Great Band, but never meant to meet.

Whoa! What a fucking disaster!

One in a Thousand

What are the odds of happening upon a decent amateur song on You Tube? I don't think I've ever finished listening to one I started until this one. Guy and a ukulele, of all things. Am I drunk or is this good? (both maybe)

I Never Travel Far..

..without a little Big Star. Had about 12 hours of drive time and filled much of it with #1 Record/Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers. It was great listening to all of that straight through, with colorful Fall trees bordering my path. Happy to be home again now, with a partially renovated bathroom and a pillow on a first-name basis with my big, empty head. There's no place like home (shoes tap twice), there's no place like home.

Talented People Suck

This is a sample from Fudge Factory Comics, Travis Millard's Web site. Browsing the site, I would say Millard is big on the skateboard scene.

Vincent Price (an avid art collector in his day - not so much now) once said that we like art that we wished we could create. I'd say that's about right.

The Song That Shamed The Stones

Rumor has it this performance by the Who shamed the Stones into shelving Rock And Roll Circus for nearly 30 years. Yes, it's that good. (And yes, the Stones were that bad.)

Enjoy.

Pandora For Books?

Enter a favorite book and this site will analyze a database of 32,000 books (and growing!), then spit out a list of recommendations. Seems pretty hit or miss at this point, but could be really cool in the coming months. Let me know how spot-on or weird your lists are, if you're so inclined ...

Sleevage

Check out Sleevage, a blog devoted to the iconic album covers we know and love. Lots of behind the scenes stories, photos, and mock-ups. If you guys don't fall in love with this site, I'll eat my shirt. (Be sure to read the story on Weasels Ripped My Flesh.)

Sleevage is a blog all about music cover art. From the LP’s of the 60’s to the digital artworks of now.

We’ll post the best or most interesting covers everyday in an effort to become the world’s best resource for great music artwork.

We’re currently in BETA release (that’s why a few things are still rough) and we’re also looking for writers who want to regularly submit to Sleevage in exchange for free CD’s and concert tickets. If that sounds like something you want to do then contact us.

Classic Animation Backgrounds

This may interest you guys not at all, but I thought it was fascinating. This guy posts backgrounds from classic cartoons. The level of detail on some of these paintings is a testament to the staggering talent at Disney (and other animation studios of the day). They don't make 'em like this anymore.

I'm betting you can all guess the cartoon that the above background came from ...

On a Serious Note: What the hell is going on in Memphis?

As a former Memphibian, I was terribly alarmed to read this article about infant mortality in Memphis. I'm sure this has been in the local news there extensively, but this is the first I've heard of it. As a New Orleanian, I was used to bad news being emphasized and blown out of proportion, but this is worrying. Any feedback fellas?

The Darjeeling Limited

I forgot to mention that when K and the kids were out of town last weekend, I treated myself to a movie, 'The Darjeeling Limited.' In some ways I'm over the poor-little-rich-kid thing Anderson's movies focus so much on, and I wasn't crazy about 'Life Aquatic' (but I only saw it once and would probably like it better if I got to see it again). I went in to this one without much in the way of expectations.

I thought it was pretty good, though certainly not gooooooood. It was for the most part well-written and acted (Brody is excellent), and funny (the constant pill scarfing is hilarious, but some of the jokes seem a little choreographed), if not a little too aware of its own preciousness. The soundtrack, on the other hand, is awesome, with splashes of old Kinks among the Indian (Bollywood?) tracks.

In short, it wasn't my favorite, but I look forward to seeing it again on DVD. Oh, and there's some Natalie Portman skin (careful!) in the short before the film.

Deep in my heart, I know Alien vs. Predator: Requiem will suck balls, but I am liking the idea of the predator/alien hybrid, currently being referred to as a "predalien" on the internets. Apparently, when an alien impregnates a host, the chestburster takes some of the host's DNA. (I refer you to the four-legged aliens who popped out of dogs in Alien III.)

Anyway, that bastion of quality journalism, USA Today, has a little slideshow that's worth checking out if you're into this kind of thing. And I know you are.

Is Rush Heavy Metal?

Episode 3 of The Meth Minute 39. NITE FITE!

205 Sand Dollar Ln

Finally, we closed. Naturally, the movers can't be here until tomorrow, and the new beds we ordered (because our old ones got ruined in storage) won't be here for a couple of days. This has truly been the move from hell and somehow refuses to die. We do like the house, though. It's too small by about 500 sq ft, but it's really close to the water (but not too close), and even though it needs a lot of updating, it's a solid house on a nice lot.

Pics of the outside here.

Rediscovering The Mats

Especially for Lurker, you know where to Find The Punk. Even though Westy dismisses the Replacements' first album as the same song written eighteen different ways, it's still one of my favorites. It's funny, sloppy, poignant and timeless.

Sorry Ma is ... the sound of exuberance! (And Tommy, even at 14, could tear it up on bass.)

Here's an excerpt from that book I won't shut up about ...
Dave Ayers, former Twin/Tone Records executive: [Sorry Ma] is the best American punk-rock record ever. I’ve always felt that way. Song after song, in terms of capturing that thing—pure octane, terrified and fearless at the same time. All that stuff that’s wrapped up in that moment in time of being a 19-year-old kid.

The Closer?

Anybody know if Joe is still closing today?

From cracked.com, the 6 most terrifying foods in the world.

Humans are like goats. We'll eat any damned thing. Just ask the people who make PowerBars.

In fact, you'll find foods in this world that don't even seem possible. Not just that they could exist, but that people would actually stick this stuff in their mouths without a gun to their head.

We've found six dishes that seemed to have sprung from Satan's own cookbook.

Funny, disgusting and just in time for Halloween.

Mine's On The Way!

The oral history about the Replacements has been available from the publisher since October 3rd! I spoke with someone in sales who told me that the official release was announced as November 15 to give the book time to get to everybody. Amazon's got 'em now, and mine's on the way.

By the way, this may be my all-time favorite picture of the Mats, as it so beautifully captures the band's philosophy.

Comedy Central is archiving segments of the Daily Show going all the way back to 1999 with searchable tags. It's amazing how young Stewart looks in the earlier shows. I don't know if you Bastardos are fans of the show, but for me, this is a major development, especially as I can't manage to stay up until 11:30 every night to watch it now that I have a goddam job.

Ryan Adams drinks Diet Coke, remains coherent and amiable throughout show

The show on Saturday at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center was great. Long show with an intermission and a killer light show. When was the last time you went to a concert with a light show? He used a huge disco ball, a curtain of multi-colored stars, and well aimed directionals.

Lots of stuff from Cold Roses and Easy Tiger, plus a few Demolition and Heartbreaker chestnuts. Nothing acoustic, or at least not solo acoustic. The band was loud and proud the entire time with lots of extended guitar noodling and jaw-dropping harmonizing amongst the entire band. At one point, he went into a pretty funny mock-meltdown that included a stream of consciousness rant that involved the Dark Side of the Moon, Mick Fleetwood and more obscure references. Later, he led the crowd in 'Happy Birthday' to one of the guys in the band. Stellar show. The clip above is from the show, recorded by someone unknown.

Bowie Tears It Up On SNL

Here's David Bowie performing "TVC-15" (with Klaus Nomi) on the December 14, 1979 episode of SNL.

Incidentally, this song was allegedly inspired by Iggy Pop's drug-induced hallucination that his television was swallowing his girlfriend.

Attention To Detail

That's why I LOVE Valve, maker of The Orange Box. Here are the end credits for Portal, which I finished Friday. You guys probably won't play this, right? The song is sung by the super computer that you beat at the end of the game.

"Still Alive"

This was a triumph
I'm making a note here
HUGE SUCCESS
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction
Aperture Science

We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us except the ones who are dead
But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive

I'm not even angry
I'm being so sincere right now
Even though you broke my heart and killed me
And tore me to pieces
And threw every piece into a fire
As they burned it hurt because I was so happy for you!
Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta, we're releasing on time
So I'm glad I got burned
Think of all the things we learned for the people who are still alive

Go ahead and leave me
I think I prefer to stay inside
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you
Maybe Black Mesa
That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance
Anyway this cake is great, it's so delicious and moist
Look at me still talking, when there's science to do
When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you
I've experiments to run, there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive
I'm doing science and I'm still alive
I feel fantastic and I'm still alive
While you're dying I'll be still alive
And when you're dead I will be still alive
Still alive, still alive

Exactly.

3 posts this afternoon, can you tell it's an F.-off Friday?

If You're Looking for Some Springsteen Magic..

I'll toss it in the Free Tawdry Pigpen tonight. Great singer-songwriter, if you like that kind of thing.

Who Knew John Cusack was Blogging?

Here's something he wrote in a tribute to Joe Strummer: "If Roy Orbision sang for the lonely, Joe sang for the hungry.... His voice was liquid desire and it ignited as it left his mouth, his body shaking to contain the heat, like a rocket in the first phase of lift-off.... He was a pioneer who demanded art and politics be fused in the interests of humanity and truth...Knowing him, I was always humbled by his grace and intelligence, his passion, and the sheer ferocity of his will... and Jesus Christ that man could fucking rock." Nice writing there, Lloyd Dobler. The political stuff is quite interesting, too. John Cusack makes films.

Gosh, It's Almost - ALMOST - Like She Does This On Purpose ...

Ann Coulter's in trouble again, and I really hope this grab for the spotlight takes off like the Imus thing. (Sharpton's not involved, so I doubt it ...) She's offended the Jews this time, saying that they all need to be "perfected" by becoming Christians.

This bitch literally makes my skin crawl. I had kinda hoped she would be run out of town after her tirade about the "greedy 9/11 widows," but maybe this will get the job done.

Until we see how this plays out, I invite you to read - or re-read - this fine piece of adult humor. (Hopefully the link is still good, it's getting blocked at work.)

This Game Is Amazing

So, I picked up Valve's Orange Box this week. This is a killer deal! For $37.99 (on sale), I got Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episodes 1 & 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. I already had Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1, so I jumped right into Portal. Get it? Jumped?

Get this game. Today.

Eliza Gilkyson

Eliza Gilkyson has a new CD called Your Town Tonight, recorded live in Austin, TX. This, I crave. I was fairly mesmerized by a song called Green Fields today on the radio and have been sweeping up whatever scattered bits of her I can find tonight. I love this song, Man of God, performed here in Calgary with a sweet steel guitar. Anyone familiar with her? (Not in THAT way, you dirty-minded bastards!)

How Much Would YOU Pay?

In Rainbows is out today. 5 pounds (about 10 dollars) seems right to me, but Radiohead has also given us the option of paying nothing. This fascinates the hell out of me. How many people, given the choice (and with no penalty!), will just take the music?

I know you guys aren't huge Radiohead fans, but what do you think is a fair price for new music from one of the biggest bands in the world?

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

I am a dull and simple lad
Can not tell water from champagne
And I have never met the queen
And I wish I could have all that he has got
I wish I could be like David Becker

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

And when I lie on my pillow at night
I dream I could fight like David Becker
Lead the school team to victory
And take my exams and pass the lot

(Wish I could be)
Wish I could be like David Becker
(Wish I could be)
Wish I could be like David Becker
(Wish I could be)
Conduct my life like David Becker
(Wish I could be)
I wish I could be like David Becker

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

He is the head boy at the school
He is the captain of the team
He is so gay and fancy free
And I wish all his money belonged to me
I wish I could be like David Becker

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

And all the girls in the neighborhood
Try to go out with David Becker
They try their best but can't succeed
For he is of pure and noble breed

Wish I could be like
Wish I could be like
Wish I could be like

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa

Because if I was, I could go see the Hold Steady and Band of Horses at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh.

Makers 101

In preparation for loading up the Finicky Time Portal, I thought a brief history of the Makers was appropriate. The Makers formed in Spokane, WA in the early 90s. The original line-up were Michael and Donnie Maker (brothers) on vocals and bass guitar, Tim Maker on guitar and Jay Maker on drums. Donnie has always been the primary composer while Michael has penned the vast majority of the lyrics. The early band was extremely rough and tumble and reflected a straight out of the garage mindset that flew in the face of the big rock and grunge that was popular in the Northwest in those days. Early albums All Night Riot, The Makers, and Howl reflected this stripped down, short song stompabout attitude.

Later, Tim left the band and was replaced by Jamie, who had played with me in the Young Brians. After the Brians split, Jamie put in short stints in Frenchie and Guitarded before joining the Makers. Jamie's skills were immediately pressed into excellent use, and his first album with the band, Hunger heralded the beginnings of a new direction. While the song blueprint hadn't changed yet, the guitar textures were changing.
With their next album, Psycopathia Sexualis, the Makers made major strides towards integrating some glam and psychadelia into the proceedings. While songs like "Are You on the Inside or the Outside of Your Pants" retained the punky garage energy, the production began to take on a professional sheen. Other songs like "Love That is Strange" took the band in new directions entirely.

The Makers hit paydirt with their next album, the Sub Pop release Rock Star God. The album (which received a very favorably written 3.5 star review in Rolling Stone) featured an amazing array of rockers (Looking for a Supergirl, There's Got to be a Better Way Down) ballads (Texture of a Girl, Someone Else's Son) and Who-inspired pop (Give Me Back Yesterday). Add in a variety of instrumentation (acoustic guitars, marimba, strings, Hammond B3) and a cameo from Jello Biafra on "Too Many Fuckers on the Streets" and you've got an absolute classic. Michael's lyrics are amazing and his voice is pushed to the forefront in all its Bowie/Jagger/Nick Cave splendor.

The band stumbled slightly with the next Sub Pop release, Strange Parade. The sprawling, psychadelic album has plenty of high points, and the performances are very strong, but as a whole seems to drag a little. At this point Jay left the band and was replaced by a couple of other drummers until the band met up with Aaron, their current skins-basher. Also, Tim rejoined the band, adding a two-guitar attack for the first time. After parting ways with Sub Pop, the band signed to Kill Rock Stars and quickly released Stripped, which primarily featured re-recordings of some of their earliest songs, plus a new single "Hot Kiss". 2005 saw the release of the fantastic Everybody Rise! Described by producer Jack Endino as "Pet Sounds on a budget", the album saw a return to tight pop songwriting, big guitar rockers, and more experimentation. Check out Michael's falsetto Prince homage "Ordinary Human Love" and the amazingly catchy, bouncy "Run With Me Tonight".

So what now? Distressingly, Donnie has apparently decided to retire from the biz. The hope is that Michael will do a solo album, with our good friend Jamie handling guitar duties. Still, the Makers have never enjoyed the sales or respect they deserve. They heavily influenced bands like the Vines, the Hives and the Strokes. Plus, you will never see a better live act. I'll post stuff at regular intervals For The People, and I'll start with the masterpiece of Rock Star God.

Some fellow Republicans are peeved that Sen. Larry Craig has decided to complete his term despite his earlier announcement about resigning, but the Idaho lawmaker still has his backers.

Two From Mike McCarthy

As you guys know, Mike McCarthy (JMM) drew the excellent cover for the Subteens first CD. For free. Obviously, he's a super nice, super talented guy. But besides being an underground comic book artist, he's also a director. In fact, that's what he's primarily known for these days. I dug up some prime examples of his stuff for everyone but Joe to appreciate.

Here's the Hives video for "Abra Cadaver," off of 2004's Tyrannosaurus Hives.

This one's a little older. It's a Makers video for
"(Are You On The Inside Or The Outside Of Your) Pants?" from 1998's Psychopathia Sexualias. Incidentally, Jamie (the guitar player), is one of Dave's best friends. So it all comes full circle.

Seriously though, small world ...

Radiohead's New One

Okay, the new disc, called In Rainbows, will be out on October 10. But the freaky part is, you can only download the files from Radiohead's site (so far), and you pay what you think is a fair price. Is guilt pricing the wave of the future?

Discbox is the other flavor, which includes the download, plus a CD and vinyl record. It costs $80.00. No negotiation on that one.

Ahoy!

OK, it is what is. An Old Spice commercial, but with Bruce Campbell.

Atlanta was Atlanta. Traffic and a bunch of people, but also a lot of traffic. Got gas on my hands refilling my rent-a-car, was late getting to the airport and had to rush, but security was a bitch. Stress, I'm sweating like the athlete I'm not, but then the arriving plane was late. And the departure was even later, an hour later. Traffic, I guess. Atlanta was Atlanta, and I'm happy to be home and listening to Flop, which is somehow better than when I left it. At the end of the day, music may be the only thing that doesn't fail you. And my 2 cents: Atlanta sucks!

Holy Crap!

Back in 2000, Channel 4 produced a remarkably in-depth documentary called On The Edge Of Blade Runner, about one of my all time favorite movies. To my knowledge, it's never been released in the US. (It would seem that someone posted it to Google Video a while back, but - surprise, surprise - it's gone now.)

In Search Of Steve Ditko

There was a thoroughly fascinating BBC documentary on YouTube a few days ago (broken into seven parts) about reclusive genius Steve Ditko, co-creator of Spiderman. Oh, don't bother looking for it there now, it's already been pulled for legal reasons.

Mr. Ditko basically walked away from Spiderman at the top of his game, never explaining his reasons for quitting. Ditko continued working in the mainstream comic book industry until 1998 or so, but he was never able to recapture the magic. He has refused to give interviews or make public appearances since the late 1960s, and only a handful of photos of him are known to exist publicly. The purpose of the documentary, as you may have surmised, is to find Steve Ditko. Do they? I'll never tell.

Aren't you sorry you missed it? Aren't you glad I saved it while I could? Flatulence Takes Practice!

You'll need a player to watch locally. I like FLV Player. (And it seems to work best if you open the player and then drag the file into it.)

That's IT?

I finally finished this book last night, and although I really enjoyed it, I must admit that I'm a little disappointed with the ending. I'm sorry, but I expect more than a two page wrap-up after plowing through 420-odd pages ...

Dave, your thoughts?

Army of Darkness

Tonight I'm trying on the idea that Army of Darkness is the pinnacle of western civilization. I have the deluxe boomstick edition rented and I mean to use it. Just ya'll steer clear of my house tonight, there's going to be bloodshed.

Found this old trailer last night that got me craving it.

Great forgotten punk classic

God I love this song. I'll try to put it up on the Fragile Tragic Pophead this week. Maybe I'll throw up a few beloved British punk pop Klassics. Or Maybe I Won't!

Jackass of the Week

Meet Coach Gundy of the Oklahoma State football team. Coach Gundy is very, very angry with a reporter from The Oklahoman newspaper. Evidently, the columnist reported that one of the quarterbacks on the team was a real momma's boy and played scared and was a chicken and yadda, yadda, yadda. Coach Gundy is incensed and goes on this three minute diatribe at the unfortunate reporter. A couple of things he clearly doesn't realize:

1) He is proving the columnist's point every time he refers to 'crying home to your momma' over being criticized.
2) Yes, he is an amateur athlete. However, who the hell are we kidding? Division I College Football IS pro sports as far as I am concerned. If you can't take the heat.....
3) This whole thing about having kids. This female reporter probably doesn't give two shits about all that. And who knows, maybe she DOES have kids? Wouldn't he feel like an ass if he found out she'd had one die or something? Give this schmuck a valium.

Paul McCartney's Favorite Beatles Song

I played this for Ian last night for the first time. "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" actually has a pretty interesting story, which you can check out here. For instance, the sax solo was performed by Brian Jones, and the song was almost the first Plastic Ono Band single.

The Wikipedia entry didn't, however, answer the one question I've always wanted answered: is the gibberish at the end supposed to be Bluto and Popeye fighting? It sounds an awful lot like that's what they were going for.

Dave, surely you have a definitive answer ...

Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout At The Devil!

In the beginning, good always overpowered the evils of all man's sins. But in time, the nations grew weak and our cities fell to slums while evil stood strong. In the dusts of hell lurked the blackest of hates, for he whom you fear awaits you. Now, many, many lifetimes later, lay destroyed, beaten down, only corpses of rebels, ashes of dreams and blood-stained streets. It has been written that those who have the youth have the future, so come now children of the beast, be strong and shout at the devil!

Now this is entertainment!

This was a terrible thing to do to a child, but you've got to hand it to those Japanese and their TV shows! Anything for a laugh! Thrill to the hilarious antics that ensue when someone dresses their child as a seal and puts them in front of the polar bear exhibit! God bless America, and God bless Japan!

Neon Horse

I see a video like this one sent to me from my friend Monroe and I think, "this is why they invented music videos." Reminds me of the MTV of the '80s: innovative sound, unpredictable, kinetic images, goofy costumes, and everything colorful, active and meaningless.

Space Invaders

And now, we continue our series of cool videos that Joe cannot see.

This Fucked Me Up

And I can barely watch it now ...

Floppy Weekend

You asked fer it, ya got it. Please enjoy not one, not two, but three Flop albums at F*&^ The Paradigm. For the uninitiated, Flop was, in my opinion, the finest band to come out of the Northwest in the 1990s.

What? Dave, are you nuts? Yes, I am. Nuts for Flop.

Flop, led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Rusty Willoughby (Pure Joy, Fastbacks, Llama) played amazingly catchy power pop with extremely dense and obtuse lyrics held together by amazing melodies and great vocals. I tried to model Pophead on Flop, but I didn't have the talent. Still, the ideas stuck and to me, Flop is the by far the best example of the early 90s power pop, heavy rock singles band (with the Smoking Popes a close second).

Album One is Flop and the Fall of the Mopsqueezer, an absolute tour de force. I defy anyone to find an album with a better first nine songs. The rest are great too, but the first nine rock my world. I've yet to meet anyone who didn't become horribly addicted to this album, forsaking work, kids, and spouses just to hear it. Kurt Bloch of the Fastbacks and the Fellows produced, there's a Ray Davies cover, and the Young Brians opened a couple time for the boys during this time period. 'Hello' is a special favorite, and a song I've covered many times.

Album Two is the slightly less successful Whenever You're Ready. By 'less successful', I mean 'still incredible, just not as incredible'. This was their major label debut, a deal that didn't really work out for them. Rusty writes amazing songs, but they are not exactly 'I love you' Top 40 fodder. Which is why we love 'em.

Album Three is World of Today, Flop's swan song. Tasty tunes and great production will keep you begging for more. But there isn't any. Enjoy, Bastards, enjoy.

PS: Did any of you *&^%weeds ever listen to the Parasites? Or that first Cheap Trick album? Feedback? Throw a brother a bone ferchrissakes.

In Color, Bitches!

Might be my favorite Cheap Trick record. Yeah, I said record.

By my estimation, only one stinker on the whole thang, and even it's passable. (Of course, I'm talking about "You're All Talk.")

So what's good on In Color? Well, how 'bout "Hello There," "Big Eyes," "Downed," "I Want You To Want Me," "Oh Caroline," "Clock Strikes Ten," "Southern Girls," "Come On, Come On," "So Good To See you."

Frequently Taking Pills!

Lovely

We had an inspection on the little house we wanted to buy. Turns out that termites have not suffered the slump in the real estate market that everyone else has, especially where this house is concerned. The inspector deemed it "major structural damage" and showed us a couple of spots where you could step on the floor and potentially open up a new access point to the crawlspace. We're dropping what we're willing to pay to ridiculously low levels - so low the owners probably (and maybe hopefully) won't take it. So we're back to square one. Or maybe two, since we've got a couple of other potential places identified.

The best part is that when we went out to look at the place again after the inspection, I was walking around the house and noticed a bunch of wasps on a window. Hmm, there are a lot of wasps on that window, I thought, just as one stung me RIGHT ON THE FUCKING FOREHEAD. So that evening and the whole next day, I was uncomfortable and had a little bit of a headache, but no big deal. Until around 8pm when I looked in the mirror and noticed that my forehead was swelling around the sting spot. By around 8:45 it was starting to spread around my eyes. I iced it down and that seemed to help a little. I woke up yesterday morning and my whole face was puffy. I felt really crappy, so I did the walk-in to the Doctors office. Three hours and a steroid shot later, I walked out with a prescription for allergy medicine and slightly less discomfort.

All seems okay now. Not that you care.
