Blade Runner Sequel

I'm starting to think the quality of a sequel (or prequel) is inversely proportional to the lapse of time since the original.  Star Wars, Godfather 3, Indiana Jones, etc.  Which means this will almost certainly suck a hole in the galaxy.

But what if it's good.  What if it's really good?  (I can't control my hopes.)

A LOST primer and refresher

I've been following LOST since the first episode. A pretty fantastic piece of storytelling, but impossible to follow if you missed the first season or so. This video does an excellent job of distilling five seasons into five minutes in a very creative way. See you on the island next Tuesday.

Hurricane Fay

Tense time in southeast FL. Is the family down there in the line of fire, Joe?

These 3 lines from a CNN.com story are the strangest I've read in a while:

"Four catfish kept a Delta Air Lines flight from landing on time at Melbourne International Airport on Wednesday, CNN affiliate WFTV reported.

The walking catfish, which use their pectoral fins to move and can stay out of water for some time, were on the runway and airport crews had to move them before the plane could land.

Besides the catfish, crews also encountered two gopher tortoises, a blue indigo snake and an alligator, WFTV reported."

Robot Love

Maybe it was already on my mind from catching Cherry 2000 (wonderful '80s apocalyptic B-movie with Melanie Griffith) last week, but I found Salon's Machinist column Love and Sex with Robots pretty interesting. It reviews a book (written from a doctoral thesis, no less) that predicts that people will bond ever more closely with their mechanical servants, until something like LOVE happens. Crazy?

"What's love got to do with robots?

Well, what's love got to do with pets? Levy points out that like robots, cats and dogs first pushed into human lives by providing services to our ancestors -- cats kept homes free of rats, dogs were guards and hunting partners and herders. Love was only a side benefit of such relationships, a feeling cooked up in human brains and exploited by the animals, who got shelter and food and safety from the deal."
I personally find if more likely that huge, rich corporations like Microsoft will find a way to dominate the market, squelch all competitors and charge more and more for worse and worse robots. It's more likely we'll hate the damned things. And if the robots ever turn on us, I swear they'll be like malevolent, deathray-equipped Nascar vehicles!

Have A Good Lunch

From cracked.com, the 6 most terrifying foods in the world.

Humans are like goats. We'll eat any damned thing. Just ask the people who make PowerBars.

In fact, you'll find foods in this world that don't even seem possible. Not just that they could exist, but that people would actually stick this stuff in their mouths without a gun to their head.

We've found six dishes that seemed to have sprung from Satan's own cookbook.

Funny, disgusting and just in time for Halloween.

T-birds

Everyday after school, my kids go to the school playground to run off some energy. There are a couple of other moms there that I've gotten to be good friends with, and the other day we were talking about cars. One of them happened to mention that her parents had bought two old 1967 Thunderbirds, but her mother got sick and died (God rest her soul), so they've just been sitting in her sister's driveway in Atlanta. I mentioned how much I love old cars like that, and she said if I would go get them, I could have them. For FREE! I think only one of them runs, but as she remembers them, they are in decent shape.

The kicker is that they have the big 345 horse 428 cubic-inch V8s (just in time for $3.50 a gallon gas)! I spoke to her yesterday, and it's all lined up. I'm going to head up there after the move and pick them up.

How cool is that? I almost don't want to tell anybody b/c I'm afraid to jinx it.

Because Lurker Mike has apparently taken some 'compromsing' photos of Jay.....

... I offer this PSA. For real. I guess we've given up preaching abstinence from drugs and supporting literacy in our PSAs. Now we have to tell teenagers not to show their boobies on the internets. My only complaint is that the PSA shows a photo so innocent it could be a senior picture!

Gabba Gabba Hey

We accept you, we accept you, we accept you, one of us.

Through your faithful lurking and wanton disregard of your day-to-day work responsibilities, you have demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt that you are a complete bastard, and therefore a worthy addition to this organization.

Los Bastardos Unidos welcomes Mike Lurker. More or less.

Thank God for Local News

You know, for all the crappy hairstyles, horrible banter, and awkward transitions ("......leaving sixteen dead in the fiery wreck. Speaking of heat, how's that forecast looking Bob?"), local news really does provide an important service. For instance, this clip from Grand Forks helps to educate the general public on the latest of all dangers to teens, emo culture.
