Shit

"And that's why I can make a radio out of a coconut, and not fix a hole in a boat."
- Russell Johnson, on the Professor having a degree from M.I.T.

You, sitting there: describe how Gilligan's Island shaped who you are today.

The Greatest Television Asset Of All Time

In one of television’s biggest syndication deals, “The Simpsons,” the longest-running scripted show in TV history, will finally be moving to cable television... Fox sold the reruns to its FXX network... and ... has acquired both cable and streaming rights to the more than 550 episodes. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but a representative of one of the other companies that pursued the package said that the bidding was highly competitive and estimated that the per-episode figure reached $1.5 million to $1.6 million. That would put the value of the deal at close to $900 million.

Binge Viewing

Binge-viewing, empowered by DVD box sets and Netflix subscriptions, has become such a popular way for Americans to watch TV that it is beginning to influence the ways the stories are told — particularly one-hour dramas — and how they are distributed. Some people, pressured by their peers to watch “Mad Men” or “Game of Thrones,” catch up on previous seasons to see what all the fuss is about before a new season begins. Others plan weekend marathons of classics like “The West Wing” and “The Wire.” On Friday, Netflix will release a drama expressly designed to be consumed in one sitting: “House of Cards,” a political thriller starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. Rather than introducing one episode a week, as distributors have done since the days of black-and-white TVs, all 13 episodes will be streamed at the same time. “Our goal is to shut down a portion of America for a whole day,” the producer Beau Willimon said with a laugh.

Someone lock me in the TV panic room.

A Show I Love

I know we're all far too cool to watch television programs, but IF I did watch a show, it would be Psych. I like it for the following reasons:

1) Pop Culture referencing almost non-stop, with a special emphasis on the 80s.
2) Awesome theme song as performed by the show creator's band.
3) Portrayal of male friendship that every male wishes he had.
4) Hilarity.
5) It is set in Santa Barbara but is clearly filmed in Vancouver, BC.
6) Rips mercilessly on the CBS show 'The Mentalist' which was ripped off from the premise of this show.

It's on Wednesdays (info in the above ad notwithstanding).

What The Kids Are Watching These Days

Anybody seen this show called The Misadventures of Flapjack? It's funny, but reeeally trippy. Watch the entire episode and you'll see what I mean.

"Legs!"

Brian Doyle-Murray has become quite the voice actor.

A LOST primer and refresher

I've been following LOST since the first episode. A pretty fantastic piece of storytelling, but impossible to follow if you missed the first season or so. This video does an excellent job of distilling five seasons into five minutes in a very creative way. See you on the island next Tuesday.

Conan

Tonight is Conan O'Brien's last Late Night show before moving into Leno's time slot. Daily Beast has a collection of some of his best stuff, including this video of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog outside the opening of one of the Star Wars movies. It's a bit long, but wicked funny all the way through. Of course, Jay will be offended, but who cares really?

Sweet!

Michael Sweet, friend of bastardos everywhere, is coming out with a new album, Sunshine Lies. Aquarium Drunkard is toasting it as the follow-up to In Reverse. Personally, the Thorns was a disappointment to me, and the covers album with Susanna Hoffs (Hotts!) was fun, but it was no Girlfriend. A couple of streaming cuts here have my mouth watering.

S-W-E-E-T!!

Comedy Central is archiving segments of the Daily Show going all the way back to 1999 with searchable tags. It's amazing how young Stewart looks in the earlier shows. I don't know if you Bastardos are fans of the show, but for me, this is a major development, especially as I can't manage to stay up until 11:30 every night to watch it now that I have a goddam job.

Flight of the Conchords

I caught one of the episodes while I was staying at my mother's house. It's damn funny. You get the impression that they can write these songs in their sleep. Once again, HBO is the best thing on TV.

Halpert as Schrute

I know there are some Office fans here and the above clip is the cold intro for tonight's episode, "Product Recall". The writing and performances on this show continue to amaze me. Although some have complained that this season has stalled a little, I tend to disagree. The Office is one of the few comedies that consistently rewards repeated viewings and continues to be funny each time. If you are not a fan yet, by all means pick up Seasons 1 and 2 at the vid store or Netflix and revel in the awkward glory.
