Shit and Double Shit

If you haven't read his autobiography, do yourself a favor and do so immediately.

And the winner is......alcohol, in a landslide.

So we thought it would be a good idea to drink a beer from each of the swing states. Couldn't find one from stupid Iowa so I had to make the Iowa Sunrise cocktail (refreshing!). Trouble is, my other half didn't like most of the beers, so it feel to me to drink them all. Plus, I had a little Jamison's in honor of O'Bama's Irish roots. Where's my aspirin? Did any of you other bastards stay up until the bitter end? Four more beers! Four more beers!

Hitler Gets Angry About iPhone 4S

These angry Hitler clips have been around for awhile, but this one's worth a look. I should probably explain that Gil Amelio was Apple's CEO from February 2, 1996 to July 4, 1997. Jobs convinced the directors to oust him in a boardroom coup after Apple's stock plummeted.

Shit

Gerry Rafferty. Man, I just listened to "City to City" on vinyl this weekend. The man sang "Stuck In The Middle With You" AND "Baker Street," not to mention "Right Down the Line."

Crazy Heart

Caught this last night. Bridges is excellent and after the first few minutes, you can buy that back in the day he might have run with the Waylons, Willies and Billy Joe's. Unfortunately the rest of the movie doesn't really keep up with him. I can' t really make an objective call on Maggie Gyllenhaal as she is just too cute for words, but it's pushing the ick-factor limit to see her getting it on with a fat hairy Bridges. Colin Farrell as the protege/rival country singer is also a bit of a stretch, but you get the point.

Overall, it was a pretty good little movie, but without Bridges, and without the very well-done soundtrack (T-Bone Burnett did it, natch), it would be pretty standard former hero hits bottom, falls in love, gets shit back together, etc etc story, with a touch of predictability added in for good measure. Bridges was nominated for this, and he was damn good, but it's a stretch to say he deserves a win.

I actually loved the movie and would recommend it, especially if you have any love for the old outlaw country period or Maggie Gyllenhall in her underwear. In other words, Jay, you can skip it.

Memphis keeps old fashioned swordplay alive

Apparently the traditional method of settling disputes with swords isn't over in Memphis schools. I'm just glad that this article contains the phrase "40 oz. bottle of malt liquor". There but for the grace of God....

** Please note that the above image likely does not accurately represent the sword wielder in question. It is meant for illustrative purposes only.

Web Geek Humor

This made me laugh out loud, but I should probably explain that IE6 is the shitty, antiquated browser that wouldn't die. It follows virtually no established browser standards, therefore making something that should be relatively simple these days - building a website - extremely time-consuming and difficult. (Never mind that Microsoft is on IE8 now, for Christ's sake.) Just Google "ie6 sucks" when you're bored for one IE6 nightmare after another.

There's all kinds of hacks and work-arounds to make it render correctly, and even a grassroots campaign to destroy it once and for all. Hours upon hours upon hours have been wasted on this steaming chunk of shit.

The horror, the horror ...

Tonto Tonto

Funny story:

I had known Joe approximately two days when we were watching The Tonight Show at stately Drago Manor. All of a sudden, this band came on, and Joe yelped, "Holy shit! I know that guy!" This lead singer is that guy.

Adios 2008!

Crazy year, huh? Our Bastard, Inc. 401k and stock portfolios fell apart, but a new mini-bastard entered the picture, so I'd call us ahead on the balance. Play it safe tonight (leave the lethal intoxication to the amateurs) and here's a virtual toast to a great 2009.

Stranded In Canton On YouTube?!

Finally available, and for free.

From a review in Variety:
Surfacing after 30 years, celebrated photog William Eggleston's pioneering experiments with black-and-white video teem with drunken denizens of Southern nightlife. Fitting an early-model Sony Porta-Pak with a prime lens and an infra-red tube, Eggleston approached his lurching subjects with the same close-up intensity that informs his famous still photographs. Certain sequences of lost weekends seem to surge out from a murky oblivion, although co-director Robert Gordon's 77-minute curatorial re-edit softens the edges somewhat.
More of a curiosity than anything else for me, but I've wanted to check this out for years.

Faces!

I promise that if they play Memphis, I'm there. From Classic Rock magazine:
Ronnie Wood has confirmed that the original line-up of The Faces (Rod Stewart, keyboard player Ian McLagan and drummer Kenney Jones. Bassist Ronnie Lane passed away in 1997) are already rehearsing for a full tour that will take place next year.
And More.

I'm on the road for work (what the fuck?) the next couple of days. Please try not to miss me too much.
