The Sound of No Hands Clapping

Neil Young was just a few bars into an indignant old song at Carnegie Hall on Monday night... when he abruptly threw the emergency brake.
“Wrong!” he barked, waving one hand, as if to cut off a rehearsal band. Part of the audience had started clapping to the beat — but not quite on the beat, as Mr. Young complained...
“It’s something that you probably don’t know,” he said, peering into the house from the stage, “but there’s a hell of a distance between you and me.”
At face value, that was an acoustical observation, a remark about natural reverb from somebody who has made a lifelong study of it. But it was also an assertion of order, and, on some level, a formal rebuke.

I love Neil.

Tom Waits = The Joker

We all love Tom Waits (at least we fucking better). We also all love Heath Ledger's take on the Joker (at least we fucking better). Are the two related? Watch this painfully awkward TW interview from 1979 and you tell me (at least you fucking better).

On YouTube, No One Cares If You Scream

I found this really, really well done Alien documentary the other day and thought I'd pass it along. Ridley Scott, Dan O'Bannon (R.I.P.), Ronald Shusett, H.R. Giger, Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton and a few others weigh in with their memories of this horror classic.

All seven parts can be found here.

D'ough!

The voice actors for The Simpsons are going at it with 20th Century Fox Television. Story here. Apparently they make $8 million each per season. Worth every penny?
If I was in a room with Harry Shearer I'd make him do Mr. Burns until he punched me in the face.
Would any of you bastards watch the show with different voice actors?

Noooooooooooooooo

R.E.M. has decided to "call it a day as a band." They've had a pretty good run, although they were pretty much phoning it in after "Automatic for the People" and to a lesser extent "Monster". Dare I say it's the end of the band as we know it and they feel fine?

For me these guys were the first glimpse into the world of music that wasn't pumped into your ears via 80's radio. They were, ahem, iconic alternative music trailblazers, and I will always regard "murmur" as possibly the best album of all time. And by the way, they will always be the version that included drummer Bill Berry, and the one that you could never understand what the hell Stipe was singing. That trio bullshit never worked.

Oh well, all good things must come to an end. Just enjoy this video of them in their prime...

Road Trip Friday

Taking a road trip today to DC to attend the birthday party of Young Master Hetherington (also known as A2). Between milk chugging contests and pin the subpoena on the lawyer, there will be some sort of sporting event taking place in Africa. I have no idea what it is. This clip sums up my mindset.

The Jerk

Man, Steve Martin is awesome. Here's a letter he 'wrote' to a fan back in the early 80s. The joke is already funny, and then you get to the postscript.
