Photo Blog

I came across a pretty cool photo blog today.  It lacks some of the classier features of the pictorial sites I typically peruse (no naked female warriors wielding medieval weaponry, for example) and the photographer himself is probably a douchebag, but it beats a sharp stick in the eye.

As someone who was making $400 million to make one movie once said, "I don't know if it's art, but I like it."

Sign it bastards

A petition asking Marvel Entertainment and Disney to make things right with Jack Kirby's family. If you do, I'll have a special treat for you.

This Kinda Creeps Me Out...

There's been a little too much gratuitous nudity on this here blargh, so I thought I'd step in and bring us back down to the normal low brow antics.

Some dude with too much free time and too much artistic merit decided to re create Beavis and Butthead in 3D form. My only question is "why hasn't this been done before?"

On second thought, maybe I shouldn't have posted this. Someone quickly do a post with boobs so we don't have to view this for too long...

If you haven't seen enough and want more, click here.

Children's Art Critic

Holy shit, I almost had a seizure when I saw this one. Three words: too many colors. Also, eggs aren't supposed to have ears, dipshit. F

This one wouldn't be too bad if the color were kept inside the lines, you picked a new perspective, used non-abrasive colors and asked someone with talent to paint it for you. On one hand I want to give an A for effort but... F

This one would receive an "A" if the assignment was to throw as much random shit onto a paper as poorly as you can. I've pissed patterns on snow that look more coherent than this. F

Enjoy more children's art with unfiltered appraisal here.

CAPTCHA Art

Do you know what captcha is? Me either. We see this stuff every day. Now someone with a lot of spare time has put it to use and called it art. What say you bastards?

Oscar-Winning Animation

From Drawn:
You can watch a full-length, high-quality version of Ryan, Chris Landreth’s Oscar-winning animated short film from 2004, in the YouTube Screening Room. The film is an animated tribute to Ryan Larkin, who was one of the most influential animators of his generation.
I've wanted to see this for years. Here it is.

Every word is true........

Saw The Dark Knight last night at midnight, which was a first for me and a movie opening. But I'm a teacher, and that's the kind of stuff summers are for! Every word praising Heath Ledger in particular and the movie in general is earned. He totally lost himself in the role-you are never really cognizant that its an actor playing the Joker, it just IS the Joker. A performance for the ages and a movie that really had me thinking about good, evil, and what constitutes either in the post 9/11 world. I will probably see it again in the theater, something I haven't done since 1977.

Blue and Pink Project

For some reason, I love photo blogs. Here's a nice exhibit featured on NY Times, cool use of color and kids. More great photography blogs:

Amy Stein
Zoe Strauss
Jonathan Gitelson
Todd Deutsch Love his work, but alas, not updated often.

Hello, Frank..

Interesting article on Donnie Darko, one of the most often watched disks on my shelf. (That is, I watch the movie encoded on it, I don't stare at the physical disk.)

"More impressive still, he evokes the life of a late-'80s adolescent with a tone that hovers somewhere between nostalgia and dread. It's very hard, especially when the soundtrack is this irresistible, to revisit a period without making it seem like facile "I Love The '80s" nostalgia."

One of my favorite lines:

New Girl: "Donnie Darko? Your name makes you sound like a superhero or something."

Donnie: "What makes you think I'm not one?"

Robert Frank, William Eggleston & My Dad

Here's a damn good photo my dad took when I was about a year old. The composition is a little off, but I like the use of yellow and the story that the photo implies. That's my mom sitting in the background and my paternal grandmother standing beside her.

Just digging through some old files and wanted to share.

Classic Animation Backgrounds

This may interest you guys not at all, but I thought it was fascinating. This guy posts backgrounds from classic cartoons. The level of detail on some of these paintings is a testament to the staggering talent at Disney (and other animation studios of the day). They don't make 'em like this anymore.

I'm betting you can all guess the cartoon that the above background came from ...

William Eggleston

Here's an article about William Eggleston and the recent documentary, William Eggleston In The Real World. Somehow, the article is better than the documentary. (But from various clues in the documentary, I was able to determine where Mr. Eggleston lives.)

Check it here.

The Story Behind a Picture (2 of 3)

I found this article you should check out on the Smithsonian site telling the story behind this wonderful Eggleston photo. The documentary revealed a fascinating character in the photographer: at times a Gregory Peck-like gentleman, charming and noble, at others a hard-drinking, chainsmoking eccentric, both amazing and kind of pathetic. We also see Eggleston as a late night musician, playing the piano after much whiskey.

Why is it so exhilarating to find a connection between two things you love independently? My next discovery was a jaw-dropper..

William Eggleston (1 of 3)

It's not easy to talk about what makes an image interesting and involving, so I'll just say that William Eggleston's simply are. A documentary about him caught my eye last night because he lives in Memphis. The doc was no better than OK, but the barrage of his photos left me visually intoxicated. They're so simple, but utterly arresting. A quote of his was in the film, "The obvious is my enemy." His material wasn't the obvious, but it was contained in it. I went to the internets to see more, and did. Stayed tuned, this story is just beginning..
