Stare Dad Comics

Ok, these are completely fucked up, but they make you laugh in a demented sort of way. Basically, this cartoon started it all, and now people use the graphics and add their own captions. The poor little boy comes to his dad with a problem. Dad can't be bothered and he stares him down. Hilarity ensues. The result is an example of demented parenting... or hours of fun.

If you like what you see here, and I think you do, you can find TONS more here. The greatest hits can be found here.

DOA

"To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material." -Roger Ebert

Compiling a Metacritic score of 28, The Spirit may be this Christmas' film equivalent of congealed salad. I think it's a mortal sin to cast Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson and fail to make a watchable movie. Looks like Jay was right about this one. Guess I'll have to wait 70 more days for another good comic book movie.

Hellboy II

I remember enjoying the first installment of Hellboy. Good action, some memorable lines and Selma Blair. I was pleasantly surprised to see there's a coming sequel. Should be an ideal date-night movie for you married blokes. Chicks dig comic book movies.

Here's One For Dave

How 'bout the first ten issues (so far) of Alpha Flight on John Byrne's own forum? Now I don't have to dig out my old copies to relive my junior high geekiness. As a bonus, Byrne frequently posts comments with humorous stories or bits of trivia.

Little Known Facts About Our First President

These are from Brad Neely's Creased Comics. Most are just weird, but some made me laugh ...

Concerned

I was talking to Joe about Deathmatch and was reminded of this Half-Life 2 comic that a guy made using something called Garry's Mod. He poses the characters in-game, takes a screen shot, and then adds the dialog. (Sounds time consuming, no?) The comic follows Gordon Frohman, a bumbling idiot who is repeatedly mistaken for the game's hero, Gordon Freeman. Each new chapter in the comic is a different level in the game.

There are lots of these game-derived comics, but this is one of the best I've seen.

It's funnier if you've played Half-Life 2, but you'll get the gist ...

Read it here.

Heath Ledger As The Joker

Looks promising. Summer 2008 is shaping up nicely for us comic book geeks.

Geek Out Part Deux!

Iron Man (Mark III Armor), created by Stan Winston. I'm telling ya, this is going to be the superhero movie to beat. Of course, I could be wrong.

From superherohype.com:

"The film tells the story of Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man."

Spidey Grows Up

"It kind of changes everything when you're a dad. You don't have the same time to hang out with your friends. You don't have the same time to do other stuff that, for me, I used to do. But you're trading it up for something that's better, which is getting to hang out with my daughter, and that's amazing."
Sounds like some musician I know.

Geek Out!

First official image of Iron Man, presumably early in the movie when he's escaping the prison camp. Pretty damn true to the original, I might add.

By all accounts, Iron Man will be approximately 39.4842 times better than both Fantastic Four movies combined. (Statisticians ... go figure!) Did y'all know that Jon Favreau is directing and Robert Downey, Jr. is Tony Stark?

May 2008 release!

Comic Book Geek Out!

Zack Snyder, director of 300 and the upcoming Watchmen, has very cleverly embedded an image of Rorschach into the R rated 300 trailer at the 1:52 mark. Maybe the first easter egg in a movie trailer, I dunno.
From Wikipedia: "Rorschach is a fictional character, a superhero featured in the acclaimed 1986 DC Comics series Watchmen, arguably the main protagonist of the series. Wearing the inkblot-like mask he considers his true face, Rorschach has continued his one-man battle against crime long after superheroes became both detested and illegal. Rorschach’s actions and journal writings display a belief in objectivism and moral absolutism, where good and evil are clearly defined and evil must be violently punished. He has alienated himself from the rest of society to achieve these aims."

As an interesting bit of trivia, Terry Gilliam was once approached to direct Watchmen, but he determined that it couldn't be made.

Klaatu Barada Nikto

One day, scientists and scholars may satisfactorily explain the wondrous and perplexing mysteries of the universe, such as how Stonehenge came to be, what really happened to the dinosaurs, or why I laughed at this for ten minutes the first time a I saw it.

(And why the totally unrelated title, you may ask? Because I'm the Grand Imperial Poo-Bah, that's why.)

Maybe He'll Come Back as Eugenius...

Captain America is evidently killed off in the latest issue. Not being the comic book nerd that you bastards are/were (I had girlfriends in high school), I never really read him, but it's sad, nonetheless.

Story here.
