They're At It Again

The Tennessee state legislature - a deep well of unintentional comedy - continues in the fine tradition of the Butler Act (think Scopes Monkey Trial).
A state senator has crafted the Don't Say 'Gay' Bill. This would prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality from grades K-8.
It has been repeatedly delayed from discussion on the Senate floor, and there is thought to be little chance it could pass both houses. Still....
Students appear to demonstrate more sense than the legislature, and are rallying against it.

Palin's "Going Rogue?"

A recent CNN article suggests that as a McCain victory becomes less and less likely, Sarah Palin has begun looking out for Number One, deliberately going off-message with an eye on 2012. My favorite part of the article?
"Her lack of fundamental understanding of some key issues was dramatic," another McCain source familiar with prepping Palin told CNN, saying it was probably the "hardest" to get her "up to speed than any candidate in history."Read the rest here.

I Swear I'm Not Palin Obsessed

Matt Taibbi, in a Rolling Stone article posted today, sees the rage in my heart and dissects it with laser precision. (My rage, not my heart.) My fellow bastards, this is not to be missed.
Here's a piece:
Palin belongs to a church whose pastor, Ed Kalnins, believes that all criticisms of George Bush "come from hell," and wondered aloud if people who voted for John Kerry could be saved. Kalnins, looming as the answer to Obama's Jeremiah Wright, claims that Alaska is going to be a "refuge state" for Christians in the last days, last days which he sometimes speaks of in the present tense. Palin herself has been captured on video mouthing the inevitable born-again idiocies, such as the idea that a recent oil-pipeline deal was "God's will." She also described the Iraq War as a "task that is from God" and part of a heavenly "plan." She supports teaching creationism and "abstinence only" in public schools, opposes abortion even for victims of rape, has denied the science behind global warming and attends a church that seeks to convert Jews and cure homosexuals.Read it here.

I Give You ... Animoto
This is pretty cool. Animoto lets you create movies using your own photos and music. A 30 second video is free; longer than that, and it'll cost ya.

Fascinating Response To Creationists

My wife made me aware of this the other night ...
From Wikipeida:
The Flying Spaghetti Monster (also known as the Spaghedeity) is the deity of a parody religion called The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and its system of beliefs, "Pastafarianism". The religion was founded in 2005 by Oregon State University physics graduate Bobby Henderson to protest the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education to require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution.Read the rest of his argument here, or visit the official Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster website here.
The first public exposure of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (CoFSM) and its eponymous deity can be dated to January 2005, when Bobby Henderson sent an open letter regarding the FSM to the Kansas Board of Education. The letter was sent prior to the Kansas evolution hearings as an argument against the teaching of intelligent design in biology classes. Henderson stated that both his theory and intelligent design had equal validity; sayingThe central belief is that there is an invisible and undetectable Flying Spaghetti Monster, which created the entire universe "after drinking heavily." All evidence for evolution was planted by the Flying Spaghetti Monster, in an effort to test Pastafarians' faith—a form of the Omphalos hypothesis. When scientific measurements, such as radiocarbon dating, are made, the Flying Spaghetti Monster "is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage."
- "I think we can all look forward to the time when these three theories are given equal time in our science classrooms across the country, and eventually the world; One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence."
The Pastafarian belief of heaven stresses that it contains beer volcanoes and a stripper factory. Hell is similar, except that the beer is stale, and the strippers have VD.
The religious text of the Pastafarian religion is called the Loose Canon.
In place of the Ten Commandments, it contains the Eight I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts.

RIAA Continues To Not Get It

In a bid to hold on to the title of Biggest Assholes on the Planet, the RIAA now claims that making a digital copy - for your own personal use - of a CD that you legally purchased is ... wait for it ... theft.
From a recent copy of the Washington Post:
Now, in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.Read the rest of this heart-warming article here.
The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.
"I couldn't believe it when I read that," says Ray Beckerman, a New York lawyer who represents six clients who have been sued by the RIAA. "The basic principle in the law is that you have to distribute actual physical copies to be guilty of violating copyright. But recently, the industry has been going around saying that even a personal copy on your computer is a violation."

Sports are great

Last night I had the opportunity to be one of sixteen total UNO Privateer fans to witness them upset the vaunted North Carolina State Wolfpack. UNO is a little school that has never been ranked. NCSU is a former National Champion and regular participant in the NCAA tournament. Last year they knocked off both Duke and UNC. UNO played like it was the national championship and won on a 3 pointer with 1.7 seconds left. The entire arena was silent in shock as the sixteen of us behind the UNO bench went crazy with the players. It was awesome, and reminded me of why I love sports, and especially college basketball: You never know what's going to happen.
One ignoramus frat boy behind us yelled out, "At least we'll have jobs when we graduate" at the UNO players. Talk about a poor sport. Fuck him, and geaux Privateers!
