Record Store Day-ve

International Record Store Day coincides with Bastard Nuptial Day, and let's all get excited.
For Record Store Day 2014 (April 19), Jack White has revealed plans to issue the “world’s fastest released record” ever, moving from studio to store in record time. According to White’s Third Man Records website, the guitarist will perform a live version of “Lazaretto,” the title track of his upcoming solo album on the morning of April 19 at a special fan show inside the Third Man store in Nashville. From there, the original acetate will be rushed to nearby United Record Pressing, where vinyl 45s will be made, utilizing images taken from the recording session for cover art. The finished singles will then be whisked back to the Third Man Records store for waiting fans to snap up in what’s sure to be an instant sell-out.

Dave: Mr. White is feeling slighted that Elvis Costello got the wedding invite and he did not. He's trying to get noticed. Can you show him a little love?

A blast from the grungy past

UPDATE: The tracks have now been remastered and are in a folder called 'Bowling Shoes'. They sound much better sonically (no background noise; clearer bass and vox).

Cast your minds back to 1991: We were young, wild, and free. Except for Lurker who was already a tax adjuster for the municipality and Matt who was seeing 'Little Shop of Horrors' for the fifteenth time and dreaming of becoming a dentist. But I digress.

In the wilds of the Inland Empire, four lads gathered at Wagner recording studios in Spokane to record the follow up to their local hit album Andy's Warehouse. During the year or two since that jangly influenced album, the musical landscape had altered. While Nevermind had not yet been unleashed on the public, the sounds from Seattle were definitely influencing these fellows. They released a single from this session which charted in the top twenty in Seattle's premier music rag The Rocket for several weeks. Anticipation for the album ran high...and then nothing happened.

Internal acrimony and all the usual tired rock and roll cliches split the group up and the album that was recorded remained unreleased. In fact, only one shitty cassette tape was known to be in existence for the past 20+ years. Guitarist Jamie Frost unearthed the master tapes one day and took them to a friend with a vintage analog recording studio. He had the weird console required to play these antiquated tapes and convert them to digital glory. For Those Partner Bastards who are interested, see what all the fuss was about. The drums are amazing.

Catchy Friday

Anybody ever heard of The Futureheads? This is from their first album, going back to 2004. Where the hell have I been?

Black Keys + Flaming Lips = Black Lips??

Not really.
But thanks to the resourcefulness of Matt, there will be a Tri-Bastard Summit in May featuring Black Keys / Flaming Lips in concert. Jay and yours truly to attend. Contemplate our awesomeness.

He's The One Who Likes All Our Pretty Songs

Bastards of a certain age might recall the Northwest outfit Nirvana, who celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of their more popular albums this week. Sirius XM runs Nevermind Radio on its Channel 34 starting Friday. Included: a Jon Stewart two-hour town hall with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig.

Vote Metal

The Awl (whatever that is) has a list of members of congress with totally metal names. Topping the list: Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY). I guess John Boehner would've made the list if it was totally porn star names.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

I've been needing some good new music lately, and these guys scratch right where it itches. Holy shit they rock. I'm sitting here listening to them and I'm starting to feel like Bevis and Butthead. I'm hearing Jesus and Mary Chain, White Stripes, and Rob Zombie. Have you bastards already picked up on BRMC or am I once again late to the party...

I should probably go say a few Hail Mary's after listening to this stuff, it just sounds a little E-vil...

Any of You Bastards Ever Listen to These Guys?

The Dandy Warhols had a few great albums early and gradually got worse. However, this is a great song and the video is even better because the chick is playing topless. Her name is Zia McCabe (aka Zia McBabe). She was hot then but weighs about 3 bills now. Anyway, did anyone else get into the Dandys? Is it bastard accepted, bastard approved?

The Whigs - In The Dark

The next few weeks are going to be good ones for music loving Bastardos. New albums are on the way from the Hold Steady, the National, Devo (hey, Jay, have you heard?!), Drive-by Truckers, and my beloved Whigs. Speaking of, you can get a three song pree-vue right here courtesy of Dave Matthew's ATO Records. The first song, 'Kill Me Carolyne' is the first single. I am very seriously considering picking this up on vinyl. Because I'm that far ahead of the curve.

Bruce, London, 1975

It's amazing that a live performance this good could be allowed to sit on a shelf for 30 years before being released. Not only is the music superb, but the quality of the recording is excellent.

Sorry to bump Morrissey out of the headlines, Jay.

A Behind The Scenes Look At Some Classic Videogames

Sonic
In hindsight, Yuji Naka and Hirohaku Yasuhara almost regretted opting for a local foundry rather than sub-contracting from abroad. During the heatwave of summer 1991, the Yokohama Seitetsujo metal foundry had to keep four teams on the go to meet their deadlines. Over 32 billion brass rings have since been completed in these traditional molds.
I had no idea!
