That's cool. Was that recent? It looks like contemporary Emmylou. I know that song was written back in the 60s or something, and the Everly Bros did it, and Nazareth had a big hit with it, but to me it will always be a Gram Parsons song. Or I should say a Gram / Emmylou song.
I know Elvis did a couple of Gram's songs on 'Almost Blue' ('I'm Your Toy' and 'How Much I Lied'). You know, I wasn't really cognizant of E at that point. Were the majority of his fans bleeding from the eyes over that one? I LOVE it, obviously.
The album (Almost Blue) was a hit in England, but rather as a novelty and on a swell of goodwill Costello enjoyed there at the time. The US fans didn't hate it as much as just disregard it as a genre exercise, much the same way the Juliet Letters and his Bacharach collaboration were treated in the 90s.
What people who accused EC of dilettentism didn't understand is that even prior to his recording career, he was fully conversant in the works of Parsons, and by extension, The Byrds and the Louvin Brothers. He performed Bacharach songs on his first Stiff tour of England. So, the inspiration was always there. His 2004 album The Delivery Man features both Emmylou and Lucinda Williams on various vocals.
