No. You're in good company. I pronounced it like "Smog" as a youngster... and then evolved into a true Tolkien nerd and read the language appendices. I also said Sauron incorrectly for years, and technically didn't even get Gandalf right.
Sauron - "Sou-ron" (like "ou" in "house") Gandalf - "Gan-dolv" where "f" in the middle or end of a word is pronounced like "v".
The films have done a fine job sticking to the intended language.

Smowg? All these years, I've pronounced it basically like "smog" in my head. Am I alone on this?
How distracting! I missed the rest of the preview, sitting there going "Smowg? Smowg?"

Ah, no language appendices in my old Hobbit. I was right along side you with Sauron and Gandalf. Tolkien was amazing.
Nerds.
