article about some of the particularly evil obstacles an up-and-coming band can expect, written by Mr. Albini. The article originally appeared in
Maximum Rock 'N' Roll back in the nineties, so some of the numbers may be off now. But it's still just as depressing.

Sounds about right. Albini is a cock, but I think he's on target here.
Wow, that is depressing. It reminds me of something I heard about the Nirvana phenomena: that they were an instance where the kids managed to get ahead of the marketing and decide for themselves that something was good. And that the studios would be careful to never let it happen again.
Brutal. I remember reading 'This Band Could Be Your Life' and being surprised about how incredibly poor all those bands were, even after they had gotten pretty successful.
It's just wrong. That's part of why I'm having a hard time working up any tears for the major record labels as their old business model crumbles.
