Kindle Again

Truth be told, I had read all the rumors about the third generation Kindle coming in August before I made my July purchase. Well sure enough, the announcement was made last week, Kindle 3 ships August 27.

"But Jay," I hear you saying, "Amazon only has a 30 day return policy. You're screwed."

That's why I hedged my bets and bought the Kindle 2 at Target, who has a 90 day return policy.

So what's the big deal about Kindle 3?
  • All-New, High-Contrast E-Ink Screen – 50% better contrast than any other e-reader
  • Read in Bright Sunlight – No glare
  • New and Improved Fonts – New crisper, darker fonts
  • New Sleek Design – 21% smaller body while keeping the same 6" size reading area
  • 15% Lighter – Only 8.7 ounces, weighs less than a paperback
  • Battery Life of One Month – A single charge lasts up to one month with wireless off
  • Double the Storage – Up to 3,500 Books
  • Books in 60 Seconds – Download books anytime, anywhere
  • Free 3G Wireless – No monthly payments, no annual contracts
  • Built-In Wi-Fi – In addition to the 3G wireless, you can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots
  • 20% Faster Page Turns – Seamless reading
  • Enhanced PDF Reader – With dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights
  • New WebKit-Based Browser – Free 3G web browsing (experimental)
So far, I LUV reading on a Kindle.

But you see, I've got all these books already, discovered at random used bookstores and physically unique. For me the experience of reading a book goes beyond the content, involves romance and foreplay. Reading a book is like making love; reading a kindle is like fucking. (As if I remember anything about either one!)

Maybe that's the difference between us: I'm getting some and you're not.

(Rim shot!)

Seriously, maybe the difference is that I don't have books stockpiled. I buy them one at a time and typically finish them before I go shopping again.

But I like reading something that weighs next to nothing, and I like being able to buy a book (and have it within seconds!) while lying in bed. Having had digital music for about ten years now, digital books don't seem like such a stretch.

Matt, you've read some stuff on your iPad, what do you think?
