Golden Books

I've been meaning to post this for awhile, but Josh Cooley, a mighty talented story artist at Pixar, has produced a series of Golden Book parodies based on classic movies for adults such as The Terminator, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Good Fellas. I've collected the ones I could For The Price of a few minutes. Just ask for Cooley ...

Shit

He's Columbo to many, but I'll always think of him in a few choice movie roles: Murder by Death, Wings of Desire and The Princess Bride.  Have any of you seen Wings of Desire?  Some sub-title reading required, but it featured Falk and a young Nick Cave.  More of a film than a movie.

RIP Peter Michael Falk

I'm Back!

From vacation, that is. Here are a couple of photos from Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, made famous by 1994's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. (Click to embiggen.) The book cover's Bird Girl isn't there anymore, by the way. She was donated to Savannah's Telfair Museum of Art to avoid disturbances by visitors to the cemetery.

Bedtime Story From a Bad Motherfucker...

For those of you with kids, I'm sure you've felt this way...

Evacuate?

Stephen Hawking says our long-term future as a species - like, beyond the next 100-200 years - depends on colonizing space. (transcript here). Any of you upstanding bastards have time shares off-planet?

Heaven's Got A New Angel

Seth Putnam, lead singer of Anal Cunt, has died of a heart attack at age 43. He had so much more to give.

Super Gr8.

Super 8 is a fine way to spend your hard-earned entertainment dollar.  At times it feels like a tribute to Spielberg with shades of The Goonies, Jaws, Jurassic Park and ET, which spells good summer fun, with some sappiness, of course.  And Elle Fanning is a helluva good young actress.

I really like that this was not 3-D, which has become tired and expensive.  After Avatar, the industry should have just said, "well, there you have it."

What other summer films are on your radar?  (I know we're all about to wet our pants to see HP7b, so skip that one.)

I Know One Bastard Who'll Watch This

A little Gervais from Big Think, one of my favorite websites.

Hmm...

I usually keep up on what all the cool artists are doing. Somehow this one slipped by.

Yikes

On a totally unrelated note, anybody going anywhere this summer?

Pizza and Zombies

I figure you wanks who can play on YouTube during your workday came across this a long time ago, but I, shackled by a corporate firewall, just discovered it.  I was always a sucker for those Choose Your Own Adventure books, but there was never one with pizza and zombies.

Circuital

You knew I was gonna.

My Morning Jacket has been one of the bands I have most consistently enjoyed over the last 7 or 8 years. They've been severely imitated to the point where most bands' sound would seem diluted (I'm looking at you, Fleet Foxes), but thanks to Jim James sometimes maddening forays into Prince-ish weirdness and sheer talent, they have remained vital and interesting. I cannot recommend their live show enough. Hopefully they will extend their tour into the fall and hit one of the vital Bastardo locations so I can drag one of your sorry asses with me. Of course, Florida Takes Precedence.

Memphis Pop Pilgrimage

I suggested The Arcade Restaurant on the A.V. Club's Pop Pilgrimage website, and they visited! (And if you haven't seen Mystery Train, shame on you.)

Billing itself as “Memphis’ Oldest Café,” The Arcade Restaurant has been at the corner of Memphis’ South Main Street and G.E. Patterson Boulevard since 1919. Just steps away from the train station, the restaurant has seen its surroundings rise, fall, and rise again with the fortunes of the city. Once the bustling heart of Memphis’ downtown, the neighborhood around the Arcade fell into decline in the 1970s and ’80s. By the time Jim Jarmusch arrived to shoot his 1989 film Mystery Train, hard times had overtaken what had become an especially seedy part of town.

Thankyouverymuch.

We were just lamenting how we still miss George Carlin, and now another voice who was noted for 'telling it like it is' is gone. Gil Scott Heron, dead at 62. Do yourself a favor and give eight minutes of your life to listen to this.

Vincentennial

St. Louis is hosting a week-long celebration of Vincent Price, including film screenings. About Tim Burton's "Vincent", Price praised it "the most gratifying thing that ever happened. It was immortality – better than a star on Hollywood Boulevard".
Lurker, are you watching?

Watching the operation

Not sure why the cool Marvel heroes are mingling with the DC losers, but I liked the picture.

That's all I got.

Happy 70th Zimmy!

An Examination of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’

Malcom McDowell and Anthony Burgess discuss the book and film about a year after the movie's release. You could do worse.

I Miss Carlin

This was true 100 years ago and it will still be true 100 years from now. It'll just be worse ...

Hot Hot Hype

I'm such a slut for trailers. Especially with first-album Cars in the soundtrack. My movie dolla dolla bill goes to this before Thor or X-men.

Eric will understand

The 1980 school year at Northwood Junior High was somewhat truncated. Can't remember why.

Pop Pilgrims

The A.V. Club has a new series in which Brian Berrebbi & company travel to pop culture landmarks. (Can you guess what it's called?) Last week was Fox (Nakatomi) Plaza from Die Hard. This week it's United Methodist Church from The Graduate. Pretty cool ...

Oh, the site is here.

Ouch

This one's hitting a little too close to home today.

Freedom Riders

Anybody going to watch this? A little known fact: my cousin, Ray Arsenault, literally wrote the book on the Freedom riders, and by that I mean the book that this series is based on. He has been on Fresh Air, and was recently on Oprah, and my guess is he will get airtime in this. All kinfolk boasting aside, it does look like an interesting documentary.

They're At It Again

The Tennessee state legislature - a deep well of unintentional comedy - continues in the fine tradition of the Butler Act (think Scopes Monkey Trial).
A state senator has crafted the Don't Say 'Gay' Bill. This would prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality from grades K-8.
It has been repeatedly delayed from discussion on the Senate floor, and there is thought to be little chance it could pass both houses. Still....
Students appear to demonstrate more sense than the legislature, and are rallying against it.

What Does That Even Mean?

In this context, I mean.

Healthwatch

Wanted to take a minute to advocate against smorking, as I'm sure there's pressure on all of us to smork. My mentor - Dr Nick Riviera - warns us of its ill effects: bonus eruptus and eyebrow dilation, among others. Hope no bastard is a smorking casualty.

Let's Bore Jay to Death

The Saints took Mark Ingram in the first round. What does this mean for Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas? I think the Titans were smart taking Jake Locker in the first.

Common People

Most of you will be taking today off to watch the royal wedding coverage, right? Hey, no judgments.
Please to enjoy William Shatner's cover of Pulp's Common People, complete with animated Star Trek.

Who Is John galt? Who Is Interested in This Movie?

I've been chipping away at this book for a few months. Anyone read it? Anyone interested in this flick. It's theme seems pretty relevant these days.

Who Needs An Excuse to Drink?

All this flooding makes me thirsty.
May you Memphians among us be safe and hoisted by your own pontoons amidst the deluge.

Let Me See Your Surprised Look

From The New York Times:
When talking about the Tea Party movement, the largest number of respondents said that the movement’s goal should be reducing the size of government, more than cutting the budget deficit or lowering taxes.

And nearly three-quarters of those who favor smaller government said they would prefer it even if it meant spending on domestic programs would be cut.

But in follow-up interviews, Tea Party supporters said they did not want to cut Medicare or Social Security — the biggest domestic programs, suggesting instead a focus on “waste.”

Some defended being on Social Security while fighting big government by saying that since they had paid into the system, they deserved the benefits.

Others could not explain the contradiction.

“That’s a conundrum, isn’t it?” asked Jodine White, 62, of Rocklin, Calif. “I don’t know what to say. Maybe I don’t want smaller government. I guess I want smaller government and my Social Security.” She added, “I didn’t look at it from the perspective of losing things I need. I think I’ve changed my mind.”

Here We Rest

Jason Isbell's third solo effort continues the melodic Americana tradition of his first two with some Muscle Shoals soul thrown in. Like his first two, this is a pretty mixed bag, with a couple of sublime moments ("Codeine"), but still too many tepid shufflers ("Stopping By"). I've enjoyed it so far, but still feel like I'm waiting for a breakthrough from Isbell as a solo artist and am beginning to wonder if he lacks some versatility in his songwriting and is showing some limitations in his singing. Nice album art, though... Flee The Past.

Carlin On Religion

Ladies and Gentlemen....The Rolling Stones!

I guess reading the Keef book got me all in a dither over the Stones again. My appreciation is actually much greater after reading the book. Tough to touch that quartet of defining albums (Beggar's, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile) that helped them get away from trying to follow the currents of pop music and get back to being the blues band they started out as, but I can find some charm in just about every release, especially the oft-maligned It's Only Rock and Roll. Any requests?
