School was out for an entire week. The adults tried to figure out if it was safe to go outside and breathe in the heady particulate mountain mix that coated our entire world. I wore a bandanna and sunglasses everywhere.
If memory serves, Dave -- you spent the greater part of the week "huffing dust" in the attempt to come to some higher understanding of why Bachman-Turner Overdrive kept breaking up, and which party owned the rights to the band, which to the designation "BTO", and so forth. There was sweet cosmic truth in there somewhere. You were going to find it.
Here in Memphis, the eruption was one of those "wheel the TVs into science class" events, like a space launch. Kind of shocking to hear it may have affected some people's lives.
I was mad because the only place I could ever hear Van Halen was on the school bus. No school, no Van Halen. I turned to my brother's Kinks albums as solace and the rest is history. Thanks Mt. St. Helens!
