Interesting Lennon Interview

You may have heard that YouTube is recognizing the 25 most creative videos that have ever been uploaded. This one is a John Lennon interview from 1969 by a 14-year old kid who snuck into his hotel room, wonderfully animated. It seems very Lennon and very 1969, see what you think. (You may need to click on it to see it fully.)

Something In The Stars Says That We Are Through

The Golem - Black Francis from Black Francis on Vimeo.

Black Francis' next album is the score he was commissioned to perform with Paul Wegener's 1920 film "The Golem." Above is the film in its entirety. The music is quite good, naturally.

On a related note, the Pixies played a show in Santiago, Chile on the night the last miner was brought up, and as a dedication, played a 33 song set, their longest ever.

Eric Stoltz Is Not Funny

Not sure how many of you bastards know this, but Robert Zemeckis shot Back To The Future for five weeks with Eric Stotlz playing Marty McFly.  Stotlz didn't work out and they basically started over, but these clips of the original footage are fascinating ...

Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Tom Waits

Want a cool new 78 but don't have a record player? Don't worry, the deluxe package comes with its own record player:

"On November 19th, Preservation Hall Recordings will release 504 limited edition hand-numbered 78 rpm vinyl records featuring two tracks by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band with very special guest Tom Waits. Proceeds from the sale of this very special project will benefit the Preservation Hall Junior Jazz & Heritage Brass Band.
Mr. Waits traveled to New Orleans in 2009 to record two songs with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for the critically acclaimed project Preservation: An album to benefit Preservation Hall and the Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program, “Tootie Ma Was A Big Fine Thing” , and “Corrine Died On The Battlefield”. Originally recorded by Danny Barker in 1947, these two selections are the earliest known recorded examples of Mardi Gras Indian chants.

Both packages will be available for in-person purchase at Preservation Hall in New Orleans on November 19, 2010 at 10:00am Central and available for purchase online November 20th here."

$50 for the disk, $200 for the package.

Happy Columbus Day!

Dylan!

Going to see Bobby tonight in Tallahassee. Needless to say, I'm excited. It occurred to me this weekend that Lennon was actually older than Dylan. I had always just assumed the opposite.

I still haven't figured out this twitter thing, but this is a good start.

Sounds promising

It seems that a couple of documentarians are hard at work creating some cool sounding projects. I have to admit, at the risk of bastard hazing, I am not exactly familiar with the Big Star body of work. I am, however, familiar with R.E.M., Let's Active, and The dB's all of which will have various members helping perform Big Star's album Sister Lovers at the Cat's Cradle in North Carolina this December. the shows will be filmed as part of the documentary Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story. See, it's right here

In other documentary news, there is a documentary called Anyone Can Play Guitar about the Oxford music scene which spawned the likes of Supergrass, Ride, and some other band that I can't seem to remember the name of but I think they used to call themselves On A Friday. Here's the trailer ...

Anyone Can Play Guitar Trailer from video jon on Vimeo.

Here's a link to the film's website where they will happily take your money to contribute to the cause, but a least you will get tickets to the premiere and have your name in the credits.

I think Jay needs to get off his ass and start on the documentary about the Memphis music scene.

Shit

Soul great Solomon Burke dead at 70. His Don't Give Up On Me album is a stone classic from around 10 or so years ago.

Christmas Ideas for You Bastards' Kids

I discovered the "infectiously cute" Giant Microbe plush toys while tempting myself with another Deer Tick CD on Amazon. Their wizened marketing tool assumed I would also be interested in a lyme disease stuffed microbe. Damn right, I am.

Giant microbes and bacon salt, I'm reaching a bit aren't I? Well then what music are you listening to now? Me: Deer Tick, Grinderman, and They Might Be Giants.
