Ryan Air

Among the amenities available to residents of the UK are the budget airlines that will fly you to any secondary airport in Europe for (often literally) pennies a flight. Where they get you, of course, are the extras -- fees for everything from online check-in, airport check-in, hold luggage, carry-ons, water, etc. etc. So It hought this spoof safety card that Ryanair produced was rather amusing.

British Police Will Reexamine 1969 Death of Rolling Stone Brian Jones

From the New York Times:
More than 40 years after the guitarist Brian Jones, a founding member of the Rolling Stones, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool, British police have said they will reexamine the case after receiving new information from an investigative journalist, Reuters reported. Jones, a bohemian blues musician who helped create the Rolling Stones in 1962 (and is said to have come up with the group’s name, taken from the Muddy Waters song “Rollin’ Stone Blues”), was found dead on July 3, 1969, at a home in East Sussex that once belonged to A. A. Milne. At that time, Jones had recently left the band, and a coroner’s report gave the official cause for his demise as “death by misadventure,” though subsequent films and books (including “The Murder of Brian Jones” by Anna Wohlin, a girlfriend of Jones who was with him when he died) have suggested that foul play was involved. British officials did not say what new information they had received or who had given it to them. But a spokesman for the Sussex police told Reuters, “These papers will be examined by Sussex Police but it is too early to comment at this time on what the outcome will be.”

Anyone know what the murder claims were/are based on?

Shit.

Heroes for sale, apparently. Disney to buy Marvel.

Keep Andrew away from open windows

Apparently Noel Gallagher has quit Oasis. And this time, it's for real. But don't tell Andrew that Morrissey has quit Morrissey.

FUZZ The Musical

Speaking of David Cross, I used to love Mr. Show.

I Couldn't Stop Listening

Here's a really fascinating David Cross interview from The Adam Carolla Podcast. Apparently, Mr. Cross had a really fucked up childhood, with a father even more worthless than mine. I guarantee you've never heard him tell these stories before.

Catchy Friday

Mellow, but catchy.

A Behind The Scenes Look At Some Classic Videogames

Sonic
In hindsight, Yuji Naka and Hirohaku Yasuhara almost regretted opting for a local foundry rather than sub-contracting from abroad. During the heatwave of summer 1991, the Yokohama Seitetsujo metal foundry had to keep four teams on the go to meet their deadlines. Over 32 billion brass rings have since been completed in these traditional molds.
I had no idea!

I Got It Before, But Now I Get It

I've been immersed in the world of Vista for a few weeks now, and this Mac commercial from a few years ago - my favorite of the campaign, by the way - is really hitting home. Anybody else besides Lurker and me rocking Vista, or REALLY looking forward to 7?

Beck's Record Club

From Wired.com:
When Beck Hansen’s website relaunches in July, one of the new features will be a Record Club wherein the plugged-in sonic chameleon gathers musical pals, covers a classic album in one day, then offers tracks for download.

Which is, well, pretty cool.

“An album will be chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework,” says a statement on Beck.com. “Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track will be uploaded once a week on beck.com as well as through the web sites of those involved in the project.”

Musical cohorts will include folks like Devendra Banhart, Jamie Lidell, Nigel Godrich and MGMT. The once-named Bek David Campbell and his posse will tackle The Velvet Underground & Nico first. One can only imagine what the surreal “Sunday Morning” or destabilizing “Heroin” will sound like after this crew gets done with them.

Andy Warhol, a repurposing icon, would be proud. Now all this thing needs is an iPhone app and a Twitter feed and it’s mellow gold, baby.

It's Really Too Bad

In 1980, The Vapors released New Clear Days, an album full of one power-pop/new wave nugget after another. "Turning Japanese" was the big hit, but I always wondered why nothing else happened for these guys.

Seems it all comes down to mismanagement. The band's manager was John Weller, father of Paul Weller, and he could only effectively manage one group at a time.

This song, "Waiting for the Weekend," should have been huge. The 7 inch single - the version in the video - is over-produced (horns?!), but I couldn't find the album version on YouTube.

UPDATE! Here's the original. The single doesn't do the song justice.

Have you seen it?

This was a really terrific blend of sci fi and thought provoking social commentary. It's nice to see a summer spectacle with a lot of heart and brains. The lead actor is making his screen debut and he is fantastic. On another film note, I think the positive critical reaction has changed my mind about seeing the Tarantino flick too.

No, this is not from a sketch-comedy show. Totally legit. I made it 59 seconds, how long can you watch?

Noodling

I'm writing a song to accompany a video my work group's producing, but the process is really different for me. For one thing, I'm using FL Studio instead of instruments. Also, there are some parameters with which I'm unaccustomed. The music has to be unobtrusive and "corporate," while subtly amplifying the emotion of what's happening onscreen. (Texture and dynamics are key.) Luckily, it doesn't have to be good. (Rim shot!)

The song I'm including isn't for the score, but something else I did that demonstrates FL Studios capabilities. This is a very rough mix; in fact, there's no production at all, but I'm impressed with FL Studio's natural drum sounds.

Nice Work If You Can Get It

Lennon appears to be blowing off some steam while performing "I'm Down" at Shea Stadium. Anybody know why he nudges George and points to the keyboard near the end? My guess is that he broke something, but I have no idea ...

What A Fucking Asshole

From The Commercial Appeal:
Less than two weeks after retiring as Memphis mayor, Herenton walked into the offices of the Shelby County Election Commission this morning and picked up a petition to run for the office again, election commission officials have just confirmed.

Quirky Wednesday

I can't really say this is catchy, but it is a good song. They'd make a good house band for a haunted saloon in the old west.

Thom Yorke: No more Radiohead albums

The Radiohead frontman says his band have no intention to release another album and will instead focus on download-only singles and EPs.

Although I generally find hats like this a shade twattish, I concede that attaching a bottle opener is a nice touch.

Andrew was right

The Hurt Locker was fantastic, maybe the first great fictional film to come out of the Iraq war. Riveting, intense, often uncomfortable and always engrossing, this is the story of an army bomb squad under extreme pressure in an unfriendly place. Make every effort to see this one on the big screen, bastards.

Frantically Trying to Please

There's been some talk on this blog about Cheap Trick's 'The Latest'. Maybe too much talk. This one is definitely Robin Zander's show, and I find it to be excellent. Free Tom Peterson! (Full disclosure: I did NOT buy the 8 track).

Shit

Willy Deville, founder of Mink Deville, is dead. The obits call them a punk band, and I guess they were of that era and dressed funny, but like Television and the Talking Heads, you wouldn't call them punk if you only listened to their music and didn't know they came out of the CBGBs scene.

Official site here. Obit here.

Ronnie Biggs In The News

From BBC News:
Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs has been formally released from prison after being granted freedom on compassionate grounds.

Biggs is severely ill with pneumonia and Justice Secretary Jack Straw approved his release on Thursday after being told he is unlikely to recover.

The Ministry of Justice signed-off on his licence conditions, granting his formal release.

This One's For Andrew

The song, not the sentiment. From Norway, it's Ida Maria (Børli Sivertsen).

I gather these guys are trying to make it over here. Somewhat amusing.
